Jazz on My Mind

Jazz on My Mind

When I close my eyes everything comes alive

The sounds of drums the horns the fun

People tapping

People snapping

People laughing

The base is blasting…voices scatting

Like a seven course meal for your ears to hear

Savor the melody

before your plate is cleared

Smooth moves

Hold my hand moods

The evening soaked in endless hues

bubbling personalities

sparkling with chemistry

The glitter of smiles

Sincere to sly

Eyelashes decorate the midnight sky

Dreamy rhythms closing for the night

Saxophones awakening at twilight

Dreamy rhythms closing for the night

Breathing out a heartfelt sigh

People embracing til next time

Saxaphones awakening at twighlight

Is it morning already?

Like scripture and hallelujahs

sunlight on a Sunday afternoon

After church let’s get brunch

At our favorite jazz place

The piano saying hello

like flower petals yellow

and so nice to see you all

Photos against the wall

Quotes that fill your soul

the mellow strum of a stand up bass

welcoming like breakfast continental

The trumpet fills in love stories like a bird

calling to it’s mate.

Piano keys are running down the street

catching me with laughter

More surprises with each note

Melodies in my arms

like ribbons tied with every charm

Across the room the soft horns sweep me onto the dance  floor

painting the steps to  that place they call jazz

forever warming my heart

never skipping a beat

It’s time to take a walk
It’s Time to Take a Walk

It’s time to take a walk
down main streets
down side streets
down back streets

It’s time to take a walk
down your street
down my street
down wall street

It’s time to take a walk
down my street
down your street
down all streets

It’s time to take a walk
over causeways
over bridges
over tracks

It’s time to take a walk
and then maybe we can Talk
walk and talk together
like seams sewn together
squares of fabric
like small towns
ribbons cut
on main streets
neat & bright
cities with colors of music
hearts open wide
elevating the sounds
brushed under the rug
soft fabrics like lawns
in the suburbs

The quilt of our nation
the melting pot
do you remember the vision
from the east to west coast once dirt roads
no matter how rough &edgy we like ivy have grown

Bold smiles of hope
individuality, diversity
on the next farm
on the next block
cobblestone streets
dusty highways paved roads
rocks layed
bricks stacked
mortared home to home
torn, patched, and burned
cut up and rung
the fabric
of our nation revived and reborn

City to city constructed
and deconstructed
patterns through time
humming like sewing machines our heart beats
like rhymes
white picket fences
to the picket lines
to the shelters of the homeless
we are to be
to be loved
to be cherished to be respected

To every home lost and found stolen, rented, sold & owned
Adobe, Victorian, Colonial, Tudor, Brownstone and Rowhome
America let’s take a walk together Home is Home.

Loving People in Rhythm

Loving People in Rhythm

May, 2018

Mellow out to the amber rays
that melt our hearts with longer days
and sidewalk conversations
Words caress bitterness into forgiveness
as the painting in the sky is ever changing
The cool moon moves in on you
and the clouds just took off on vacation
After the months of heavy rains
tears of loss
colors heal the pain
reminding us like notes dancing in the air
we are in step embraced with their soulful  flair.

The improvisation of melodic expressions
captures our attention
illuminated by the depth of their lessons
connecting with sincere intentions
Retracing steps
adjusting to a new combination
vibrations speak moving hearts
transforming ways
The good news shines from inside here
In just one breath love can change the atmosphere.

Beautiful visions of phenomenal men & women
Children collaborate, communities celebrate
All kinds of flowers
like all different colors of paint
Drawing portraits, painting murals over 50ft
Dance fills the streets
Music blares  with history
the unedited version, complete
Minds brilliant like diamonds on concrete
where the rose forever grows
Summer heat will soon beat beneath our feet
negativity can’t compete
with the  heart of Philly like water ice sweet
Mouths laughing open wide
elders with grandkids by their side
Watering seeds, planting the Word of possibilities
Reaching out to neighbors, cousins & friends
planning  family reunions with soft pretzels in hand.

Sending handwritten letters licked & forever stamped
to social media hashtags
The latest drop or in the mailbox
the message is loud & clear
We are jumping on oversized pages
canvases, billboards & backdrop stages
replacing the blueprints of discrimination
with the fingerprints of our imagination
Indeed, God is making his miracles clear
like an outdoor museum hand in hand
teaching us to create together
Loving People in Rhythm.

Shout out to all the people and places that taught me love….I was placed here purposefully from the Lord above.
